If your business serves a local area - a town, a city, a region - then for getting found, your Google Business Profile often matters more than your website. It is the listing that shows up in the map and the local results when someone searches for what you do nearby. It is free. And most businesses set it up once, then never touch it again.
That last part is the opportunity. A profile that is actively looked after will beat a neglected one almost every time.
What it actually is
Your Google Business Profile is the panel that appears when someone searches your business name, plus your entry in the local "map pack" - those three businesses Google shows with a map for searches like "barber near me". Getting into that pack is some of the highest-value visibility a local business can have, because the people searching are usually ready to buy.
The bits most people get wrong
Setting it up is easy. Setting it up well is where most businesses fall short. These are the things I see neglected again and again.
Incomplete details
Wrong categories, missing opening hours, no service list, an out-of-date phone number. Google rewards complete, accurate profiles - fill in everything it offers.
Ignored reviews
Reviews are the single biggest lever here. Ask happy customers to leave one, and reply to every review you get, good or bad. Silence reads as a business that is not paying attention.
No photos or posts
Profiles with recent photos and the occasional post look alive and trustworthy. A profile with one blurry logo from 2019 does not inspire confidence.
Reviews are the engine
It is worth saying twice. Steady, genuine reviews do more for your local visibility and your conversion rate than almost anything else you can control for free. Make asking part of your routine - a quick message after a job, a card, a link. Never buy or fake them; Google is good at spotting it and the damage is not worth it.
Keep it alive
Add a few photos now and then. Post an update when something changes. Answer the questions people leave. It takes minutes a month and it keeps you looking active, which both Google and potential customers notice.
Your profile and your website work together - a strong profile gets you found, a fast, clear website turns that attention into enquiries. If the website side needs attention, that is part of what I help with, and it pairs naturally with sorting out why a site might not be ranking in the first place.
